We explain exactly how the popular game of bingo works and which basic rules apply, so that young and old alike can enjoy the fun together.
Forget the idea of it being an “old people’s game”: bingo is hugely popular across all age groups. Not least because the rules of bingo are quick and easy to explain. This makes it the perfect game for social gatherings. Here we’ve put together everything you need to know about the game.
The rules of a bingo game are simple to explain: to play bingo, you need a caller as well as any number of participants. Each player receives a bingo card, also called a ticket or bingo slip, on which randomly selected numbers from a predefined pool are printed.
The caller then draws numbers at random, one by one, from a container. If the called number appears on a player’s card, they may mark it. The aim of the game is to complete a predetermined winning pattern with the marked squares. In this case, the player shouts “Bingo!”.
After each marking, the player checks whether the new number has completed a winning combination. These combinations must be defined for all participants at the start of the game. Once a winning combination has been completed, the player shouts “Bingo!” – making them the winner of the round.
If no player calls “Bingo!”, the caller draws the next number. This continues until there is a winner. If two players call “Bingo!” at the same time, the winner is decided by drawing lots.
However, less typical winning patterns are also often played. One version requires all numbers on a card to be marked, known as blackout or cover-all. Players can also agree on their own patterns, such as having to mark all four corners of the card in order to win.
