Casino ABC: Letter L

From “La Partage” to “Low Roller”

We are moving on to the next round of our Casino ABC. The letter “L” also brings with it a whole range of exciting terms from the world of slot machines, Black Jack, poker and roulette. With us, you will find them explained simply and clearly. This way, on your next visit to our MERKUR Casinos , you will not only be able to play along, but also join in the conversation.

La Partage

La Partage is a special rule in roulette that gives you a small consolation. It only applies to even-money bets such as red or black, as well as odd or even.

Normally, this is how it works: if you place a bet on red, for example, and the ball lands on 0, your stake is lost. With La Partage, you get half of your stake back.

Important to know: this rule does not apply to all types of bets and is not available in every casino.

Ladies

In poker, ladies refers to a pair of queens. Two queens are a strong starting hand, but also one that should be played with caution. As elegant as they may appear, the ladies quickly lose their shine against aces or kings.

Late Position

The late position describes a particularly useful seating position at the poker table. Players in this position act only after most of the others have already made their decision. This means more information, better decisions and often a small strategic advantage. Because, as you surely know: knowledge is power, especially in poker .

Late Surrender

With late surrender, a player is only allowed to give up their Black Jack hand after the dealer has checked whether they have a Black Jack themselves. If the dealer does not show a Black Jack , the player can surrender and receives half of their stake back.

Lead

In poker, the player with the lead is the one who places the first bet in a betting round. In doing so, they more or less set the tone and force everyone else to react to this bet – by calling, raising or folding. But don’t let confident moves intimidate you too much. Sometimes there really is a very strong hand behind the lead, but sometimes it’s simply a healthy dose of courage and a solid bluff.

Limp In

In poker, a limp in refers to a player entering the pot by calling instead of raising. This usually happens right at the start of the round, when the first player simply pays the big blind. A limp in is the quiet way of getting into the game and can be seen as a cautious “I’m in, but I’m keeping a low profile for now.”

Limper

Anyone who opts for a limp in simply wants to call and see what happens first. That player is then referred to as a limper.

A limper is therefore the player who, in the first betting round, only calls the bet instead of raising. For example, they pay the big blind, stay in the game and try to keep as low-key as possible. Whether they really have nothing or are just pretending to have nothing is usually unclear to everyone at the table.

Line

In slot games, a line refers to the fixed arrangement of positions on the reels on which symbols are compared. A win can only occur if matching symbols appear on an active line. Lines can run horizontally, vertically, diagonally or even in zigzag patterns – depending on the game.

Low Roller

A low roller is a player who consistently plays with small stakes. No big risks, no huge pots – just a relaxed style of play. The exact opposite is the high roller, whose minimum bet alone is enough to get other players’ pulses racing.
