Casino-ABC: Letter N

From “Drawing” to “Nuts”

The letter “N” brings exciting terms from poker, blackjack and roulette to the Casino ABC. Behind this seemingly unremarkable initial lie strong plays, important rules and typical expressions that regularly come up at the table. We explain the terms related to “N” clearly, understandably and without complicated technical jargon. That way, you’ll be perfectly prepared for your next visit to our MERKUR Casinos.

Drawing

In blackjack , drawing quite simply means: I take another card.
For example, you have 14 points and think to yourself: “There’s room for more!” So you ask the dealer for another card.

The problem: it can get better – or you go over 21 and you’re out. Drawing is therefore always a small balancing act between courage and mathematics.

Natural

A natural is the perfect starting hand in blackjack. It consists of an ace and a 10 right from the start. That gives you the 21 points needed for a blackjack with just two cards. It’s every player’s dream, as a natural is usually paid out at 3:2. That means you receive a higher payout than for a regular 21.

But be careful: if you reach 21 after a split, it no longer counts as a natural. It’s still nice – just not quite as lucrative.

Newbie

A newbie is simply a beginner. Someone who is new at the table and may not yet be familiar with every technical term.

But don’t worry: every professional was once a newbie. The important thing is to stay curious and follow our Casino ABCs. That way, you’ll be on the safe side and quickly lose your newbie status.

No Peek

With the no-peek rule, the dealer does not immediately check whether they have a blackjack. Instead, the round continues as normal. All players must make their decisions first. They draw cards, stand, double their bet or split their cards. Only once everyone is finished is the dealer’s second card revealed – or in some variants, it is only dealt at that point.

For you, this means making your decisions without knowing for sure whether the dealer might already be holding an unbeatable 21. Pure suspense – isn’t it?

No Limit

No Limit is a poker variant in which – as the name suggests – there is no fixed upper limit on bets. This means that a player may bet as many chips as they like at any time – potentially even their entire stack. This freedom creates a great deal of tension, as a single decision can turn the whole game around. A bold bet can force opponents to fold – or knock you out of the round yourself.

No-Limit Texas Hold’em is particularly well known and is probably the most popular poker variant worldwide. It combines strategy, timing and psychology, because anyone who bets big needs not only good cards, but also strong nerves.

Noir

Noir is simply the French word for black in roulette.

If you bet on noir, you are wagering that the ball will land on a black number. If it does, your stake is paid out at 1:1. It sounds more elegant than “black”, but means exactly the same thing.

Nuts

The nuts quite simply refers to the very best hand possible at a given moment.

If you have the nuts, no one at the table can beat you at that point. Absolutely no one. No matter what the others are holding – your cards are better.

The important thing is that this always applies to that exact moment. If more cards are still to come, the situation can change. But as long as no further cards are revealed, you’re in the lead.
