Enjoying the game for 50 years

How it all began

On 1 February 1974, our first Arcade made by MERKUR opened in Delmenhorst – at that time still under the name MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK. From the very beginning, we focused on first-class atmosphere, excellently trained staff, outstanding service, and innovative gaming machines – with success!

Just a short time after the opening of the first MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK in Delmenhorst, MERKUR CASINO took on the leading role in the German home market.

A brand with recognition value

The former MERKUR-SPIELOTHEKEN, as attractive venues with elegant carpeted floors, suspended ceilings, and the latest gaming and entertainment machines, represented a contrast to the few, simple, and unadorned halls that predominated in Germany at the time.

Orange ceiling rings, light strips, and brown sisal wall panelling created a cosy atmosphere inside. Outside, the appearance was defined by three-coloured stripes. Looking back today, it all creates a real retro feeling.

Political framework conditions

Over the decades, political framework conditions increasingly shaped the industry and continue to pose major challenges for MERKUR CASINO GmbH to this day.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the admissibility of adjacent gaming venues on a commercial site was debated. Municipalities complained about the alleged problem of a flood of arcades in city centres.

By the end of the decade, the expansion of gaming venues came to a standstill, as hardly any permits for new premises were issued. On the initiative of the Association of the German Amusement and Vending Machine Industry (VDAI), the voluntary Automaten-Selbstkontrolle (ASK – self-regulation for amusement machines) was established in 1981 by the industry associations. Stickers for age classification of games were introduced.

European success

Twelve years after its beginnings in Germany, MERKUR CASINO ventured beyond national borders: in Amsterdam, the first international entertainment centre was opened in 1986, based on the same successful concept. Even today, the combination of highly trained staff, stylish interior design, the latest machines, and excellent service continues to delight guests.

This was followed by venues in further European countries such as the United Kingdom, Spain, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Croatia, and Bulgaria.

Award-winning: MERKUR CASINO

In recent years, a variety of awards have shown that MERKUR CASINO is absolutely on the right track with its combination of state-of-the-art products, stylish entertainment, and a strong focus on first-class service. Among other things, we have been recognised in the categories “Best Service”, “Best Ambience”, and “Top National Employer”.

Employees & Service

Since the 1980s, MERKUR CASINO has placed great importance on the training and further education of its employees. From 1987 onwards, branch managers and their deputies received standardised training.

Around the same time, the first standardised uniforms were introduced – lilac two-piece suits. Previously, the only requirement had been: a white top with a black skirt or black trousers.

Excellent service

From the very beginning, service played an outstanding role in the former MERKUR-SPIELOTHEKEN: at first, staff (back then still predominantly male) served coffee in plastic cups. Later, vending machines were installed. Today, the overall package is just right here as well: guests are served cold or hot drinks and, in some cases, snacks in standardised crockery – naturally adorned with the well-known MERKUR sun.

By the way: in 1985, the serving of alcohol in commercial gaming venues was initially voluntarily prohibited, and later banned by law. In the MERKUR-SPIELOTHEKEN, however, alcohol was taboo from the outset: guests should be able to enjoy their gaming experience with a clear head.
