A Milestone Anniversary: 40 Years of Casino Hohensyburg

An iconic venue: from the opening until today

Imagine it’s the summer of 1985. High above Dortmund, on the Syberg, an architectural highlight opens its doors: Casino Hohensyburg.

At the time, it was the most modern and largest casino in Germany – built by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia through its casino company Westspiel – a true milestone in the history of German gaming and entertainment culture.

The 1980s:

Grand opening and a glamorous start

With an investment volume of 72 million Deutschmarks, a “temple of luck” made of glass and sandstone was created, which quickly became a crowd-puller. In the very first half year, more than 500,000 guests flocked to the Syberg.

The opening itself was a spectacle: film star Gert “Goldfinger” Fröbe threw the first roulette ball, world star Sammy Davis Jr. brought a touch of Hollywood flair to the Ruhr area, and Uschi Glas was also part of the event. Even back then, the promise was clear: this is not just about gaming – this is where you experience emotions, glamour and entertainment.

The 1990s:

Rise to an entertainment hotspot

From the very beginning, the casino was more than just a place for roulette and blackjack. With over 150 slot machines and elegant gaming halls, it set new standards. In the 1990s, with the “Las Vegas World”, it brought a piece of the Strip to the Ruhr area: bright lights, bingo, wheels of fortune, new machines and even live broadcasts of international horse races.

In this way, Hohensyburg developed into the number one entertainment address in the West – a mix of casino, events and gastronomy that attracted guests far beyond Dortmund.

The 2000s and 2010s:

Change & debates

While the casino continued to attract visitors, there were repeated political discussions about the state’s role in the casino business. Critics argued that the state was active as an operator in an area it was also responsible for regulating. Economic considerations – debt reduction, waves of privatisation and the question of efficiency – also led the state government to consider a sale.

Future and privatisation

In 2021, the decision was made:

North Rhine-Westphalia sold the Westspiel Group, including Hohensyburg, to the MERKUR GROUP. This marked the transition of the casino from state to private management.

The background: the state wanted to withdraw from the gambling business and place responsibility in experienced private-sector hands. The MERKUR GROUP took over – and has since invested in modernisation and new offerings.

Today:

40 years of gaming fun

Whether roulette, poker tournaments, modern slots or entertainment events – after 40 years, Hohensyburg remains a place that constantly reinvents itself while preserving its tradition. What began as a state initiative is today, under the MERKUR GROUP, a vibrant entertainment hotspot and a symbol of 40 years of gaming, glamour and unforgettable stories.
