Throwback: Cult Arcades with Pinball & Billiards

A look back

Together with you, we take a step into the past. A time when neon lights flickered, the clatter of billiard balls and the metallic ping of a pinball machine filled the air – even then, arcades were a place for entertainment, thrills, and socialising. By the 1970s, the first video game systems for private households already existed, but home consoles were nowhere near able to compete with the modern video game machines in the arcades. So, anyone wanting to experience the full kick of gaming went to the arcade.

Pinball – The cult of the 70s and 80s

Pinball machines in particular shaped this era. In the 1970s, they were the heart of every arcade. Players tried out new techniques, perfected their skills, and competed for the highest scores. Some machines were so popular that real crowds would gather around them – everyone wanted a turn, or at least to watch as someone else set a new record.

Driving Simulators – The Virtual Driving Experience

In the 1980s, driving and flight simulators also conquered the arcades, offering a completely new level of entertainment. With realistic steering wheels, pedals, and detailed cockpits, players felt as if they were right behind the wheel of a racing car or in the cockpit of an aircraft. Whether fast-paced races or daring flight manoeuvres – these machines delivered pure adrenaline and captivated players in search of the ultimate thrill.

Billiards – The Quiet Moments of the Arcade

Amidst the hustle and bustle of pinball machines and driving simulators, there were also calmer corners: billiard tables were deliberately placed in separate areas to give players the concentration they needed.

Board Games – Classics on Large Tables

Mann oh Mann

In addition to classic electronic entertainment and skill-based games, our arcades also offered space for digital versions of popular board games such as Monopoly and Mann, oh-Mann. On large tables, players could immerse themselves in the world of strategy for hours. These games invited people to compete, laugh, and share thrilling moments together.

Sporting Challenges

Of course, there was also a wide range of machines for sporty players. Whether it was precise shooting practice on our Kimme & Korn machine or exciting darts duels in a lively group – skill and accuracy were what counted here. These games offered not only entertainment, but also the chance to compete with friends and perfect one’s own technique.

The Transformation of the arcades

This concept lasted well into the 1990s before the market began to change. With the growing success of home entertainment systems, demand in the arcades declined. Many of the once-popular machines gradually disappeared. At the same time, more and more gaming machines found their way into the arcades. In the 1970s, only two – later three – of these machines would often fit into just a few square metres. But as player interests shifted, slot gaming increasingly moved into focus. In 1977, under the name Merkur B, our first self-developed and manufactured gaming machine was launched on the market. Enthusiasm for this new form of play grew steadily, and over time, more and more gaming machines found their place in our MERKUR Arcades.

Nostalgia meets Modernity

Today, some of our arcades are experiencing a return to this classic concept. Those who wish to relive the charm of bygone times will once again find electronic darts and billiards – ideal opportunities to compete in good company and rediscover the nostalgic flair of the final third of the 20th century.
