Casino-ABC: Letter O

From “OASIS” to “Overpair”

With the letter “O”, the Casino A–Z moves on to the next round. Once again, you’ll find terms from the world of poker and blackjack that regularly come up at the table. To help you keep track, we explain the most important “O” terms in a simple, clear, and practical way – so you’re perfectly prepared for your next visit to the MERKUR Casinos.

OASIS

OASIS is a central player protection system in Germany that applies across all forms of gambling – including casinos, slot machine gaming, online services, and sports betting.

Players can choose to self-exclude or may be excluded if a risk is identified. This exclusion then applies across all providers.

If you’d like to learn more about how OASIS works and what options are available, you can find all the details in our separate article on OASIS .

Offsuit

In poker, offsuit means that your two starting cards are of different suits – for example, one heart and one spade instead of two cards of the same suit.

One-Gap

In poker, a one-gap refers to two starting cards with exactly one rank missing between them.

For example: J-9 or 6-4.

These hands have the potential to form a straight but require a bit more luck than directly connected cards.

Open-Ended Straight Draw

In poker, an open-ended straight draw means you already have four consecutive cards and can complete a straight on either end.

Example: 3-4-5-6 → a 2 or a 7 completes the straight. This is one of the best “almost-made” hands in poker.

Outrun

In poker, outrun means that an opponent ends up beating you even though you were ahead before. A poker hand isn’t decided until the final card is dealt – which is what keeps the game exciting until the very end.

Outs

In poker, outs are the cards that can still improve your hand. For example, if you have four cards to a flush, there are nine remaining cards in the deck that can complete it – giving you nine outs.

Over / Under

Over/Under is a side bet in blackjack .

You’re betting on whether your first two cards will total over or under 13 points:

Over 13 = Over
Under 13 = Under

If the total is exactly 13, the bet is lost immediately.
It sounds simple, but it’s generally more suited for risk-seeking players.

Overcall

In poker, an overcall occurs when you call a bet even though one or more players before you have already called.

In other words: someone bets, one or more players say “I call” – and you join in as well, effectively coming along at the end.

Why do it? Usually because you believe your hand is strong enough to continue, but not strong enough to justify a raise.

Overcard

In poker, an overcard is a card in your hand that is higher than all the cards on the board.

Example: you hold Ace-King and the flop shows only lower cards → both are overcards.

Overpair

In poker, an overpair is a pair in your hand that is higher than all the cards on the board.

Example: you hold a pair of queens and the highest card on the board is a 10.

That’s a strong hand – but poker wouldn’t be poker if things couldn’t still go wrong.
