2026 World Cup Matchday Prediction – Matchday 2: Who Will Come Out on Top?

The opening matchday of the 2026 World Cup has already produced a number of surprises. European champions Spain were disappointing across the board in a 0-0 draw against World Cup newcomers Cape Verde, while 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha frustrated the Spaniards with a string of outstanding saves. Brazil also looked vulnerable, managing only a 1-1 draw against Morocco. Matchday 2 (18–24 June) features fixtures such as Norway vs Senegal, Germany vs Ivory Coast and Argentina vs Austria. Spain, meanwhile, must finally deliver against Saudi Arabia. At MERKUR, we have taken a close look at the most exciting matches. Here is an overview of our predictions for Matchday 2.

World Cup Matchday 2 Tips: Quick Predictions at a Glance

Switzerland clearly have the stronger squad on paper and will be looking to make an early statement in Group B. Bosnia and Herzegovina are passionate competitors and defensively well organised, but the Swiss have more World Cup experience and a clever tactical approach. Xhaka’s leadership in midfield will set the tone. We expect a Swiss victory which may not be emphatic, but will be deserved in the end.

Prediction: 1

The USA gained plenty of confidence from their strong start to the tournament. Pulisic and Balogun were the standout performers in their opening match. Australia, however, are no easy opponent. The Socceroos defeated Türkiye 2-0 in their opener and were thoroughly convincing in doing so. Both teams therefore head into this clash with momentum behind them. A high-scoring encounter is certainly possible, but the Americans’ attacking quality should ultimately make the difference.

Prediction: 1

Both teams are under pressure after suffering defeat, but Türkiye possess the greater quality. With Çalhanoğlu and Arda Güler leading the attack and a physically strong defence behind them, the Turks hold clear advantages over Paraguay. The South Americans have so far shown too little cutting edge in attack. Türkiye desperately need this victory, and that urgency could prove decisive.

Prediction: 1

Sweden impressed in every department with a commanding 5-1 victory over Tunisia in their opening match. The Netherlands may be favourites on paper, but they could only manage a 2-2 draw against Japan. Both teams still have something to prove. Sweden are quick, efficient and difficult to play against. We therefore believe they can earn a point here.

Prediction: X

Germany have been at their attacking best at this World Cup and already made a major statement with a 7-1 victory. Defensively, however, there were a few concerns in the opening match against Curaçao. Ivory Coast are physically strong, athletic and technically gifted, making them a genuine challenge for Nagelsmann’s side. Germany currently have the necessary squad depth and determination to take early control of Group E.

Prediction: 1

Japan are one of Asia’s most in-form teams at this World Cup and have developed into a serious force on the international stage over the years. Their transitions are quick, their work rate is exceptional and their team cohesion is impressive. Tunisia must remain compact defensively to avoid falling behind early. However, the North Africans often struggle when opponents maintain a high tempo.

Prediction: 2

Spain are under considerable pressure following their embarrassing start against Cape Verde and urgently need a win. They have looked uncertain and have yet to establish their trademark passing game. However, that pressure could be exactly what awakens De la Fuente’s team. Saudi Arabia are defensively disciplined, but Spain simply have too much quality to suffer a second humiliation.

Prediction: 1

Iran are an awkward opponent, sitting deep, conceding little space and looking to strike on the counter-attack. This will certainly not be an easy match for Belgium. They will need patience and must continue creating shooting opportunities. The quality within the Belgian squad is unquestionable, and eventually spaces should open up for their attacking players. Following a disappointing draw in their opening match, their desire for three points will be immense. We expect a routine win, even if it is hard-earned.

Prediction: 1

Defending champions Argentina enter the tournament as one of the leading favourites and will not want to drop points in their second group match. Austria have established themselves as a compact and well-organised side. The Austrian team will not be easy to beat. Nevertheless, Argentina possess too much quality and experience throughout the squad to stumble here. Argentina should win, even if it is not a goal fest.

Prediction: 1

With Haaland leading the line and Ødegaard orchestrating play in midfield, the Scandinavians boast genuine world-class talent. Senegal should not be underestimated either and arrive with Mané, one of the tournament’s most experienced forwards. Both teams have the quality to beat any opponent. An evenly matched contest with plenty of goals is expected.

Prediction: X + Over 3.5 Goals

England are among the tournament favourites and will have their sights firmly set on winning the group. Ghana have several interesting players, including a number of Bundesliga professionals, but the individual quality of the Three Lions is on a different level. Anything other than a comfortable England victory would be a surprise. It is the perfect opportunity for them to make an early statement to the other title contenders.

Prediction: 1

Uzbekistan are making their World Cup debut on the biggest stage. Portugal are technically strong and highly experienced. The Portuguese know what is at stake and will want to secure qualification for the knockout stage as early as possible. For Uzbekistan, the objective will be to keep a clean sheet for as long as they can. Ultimately, Portugal’s superior quality should make the difference.
