World Cup 2026 Group H Profile: Who Will Progress?

Group H is clearly led by reigning European champions Spain. Uruguay is arguably the only opponent that can truly pose a threat to La Roja: they are experienced, tactically disciplined, and with Federico Valverde, they have one of the best midfielders in the world. Saudi Arabia showed in 2022, with their victory over Argentina, that they are capable of upsetting major nations. And Cape Verde? The “Blue Sharks” are making their World Cup debut and will face former world champions in their first two matches.

Favourites to Progress from World Cup Group H

Spain is, of course, the clear favorite. With Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Rodri, the Spanish team boasts one of the best attacking and midfield lineups in the entire tournament. Uruguay is the likely contender for second place. Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde are battling it out for third place, though Cape Verde, as a World Cup debutant, is at a disadvantage.

World Cup Group H: The Four Participants at a Glance

Uruguay

Two-time World Cup champions: in 1930 on home soil and in 1950 with the legendary “Maracanazo” against Brazil. Since then, Uruguay has been waiting for its next major title. Its best finish in recent years was fourth place at the 2010 World Cup. For the first time in years, neither Luis Suárez nor Edinson Cavani is on the roster; both have retired from international play. Darwin Núñez, who has been scoring consistently for Liverpool, is expected to lead the charge. The linchpin is Federico Valverde: The Real Madrid midfield star had an outstanding season with 20 goal contributions in 42 games.

Spain

With 16 World Cup appearances, one World Cup title (2010), and the title of reigning European champion since Euro 2024, Spain is the team in the best form of recent years. Coach Luis de la Fuente is relying on a younger lineup: Dani Carvajal and Álvaro Morata are not included. In their place, 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, one of the best players in the world, is in Spain’s ranks. Pedri is back in top form after his injury layoff, and Rodri is a sure starter anyway. The qualifying campaign was dominant: five wins, one draw, and a 21-2 goal difference.

Cape Verde

With a population of 490,000 and not a single player in Europe’s top leagues, Cape Verde still managed to finish ahead of five-time African champions Cameroon in the African qualifiers. They ended the campaign with seven wins, two draws, and one loss. More than half of the “Blue Sharks” squad consists of players born abroad who represent the island nation through their roots. A major setback just before the tournament: defensive leader Logan Costa is out with a torn ACL. As World Cup debutants, the Cape Verdeans will face former world champions in their first two matches. A tough start.

Saudi Arabia

The victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup was one of the greatest moments in recent tournament history, and it transformed Saudi Arabia’s self-confidence. Since then, the country has invested heavily in its soccer: The Saudi Pro League is increasingly attracting national team players, which is strengthening domestic soccer. With seven World Cup appearances in total, reaching the Round of 16 in 1994 remains the team’s only success beyond the group stage. In Group H with Spain and Uruguay, reaching the Round of 16 again is an ambitious goal, but not impossible as one of the eight best third-place finishers.
