Bundesliga Matchday Forecast – Matchday 7, 2025/26

Matchday 8 in the Bundesliga promises plenty of excitement – both at the top and bottom of the table. League leaders Bayern Munich aim to continue their flawless run in Gladbach, while chasers RB Leipzig face a tricky away trip to Augsburg. Behind them, an in-form Stuttgart side take on Mainz with confidence. At the bottom, Gladbach, Wolfsburg and St. Pauli are in deep crisis and desperately need a win. Cologne also face a massive challenge away at Dortmund. While the top teams begin to pull away, many traditional clubs are struggling to keep up.

MERKUR Quick Tips for Bundesliga Matchday 8

Bremen vs. Union Berlin

Union gained confidence from their win over Gladbach and seem to be finding their feet in the league. Bremen, meanwhile, rely heavily on the individual brilliance of their attacking players but show too many defensive gaps. A 31:11 shot ratio in favour of Heidenheim last week underlines their problems at the back. Both teams are capable of wild matches – a high-scoring Friday night is on the cards.

Tip: Away win (2) + both teams to score

Frankfurt vs. St. Pauli

Frankfurt showed clear improvement in the 2–2 draw at Freiburg but once again dropped points. Burkardt scored twice, yet individual mistakes cost them victory. St. Pauli, on a four-match losing streak, have slipped to 14th place. With home advantage and more attacking quality, Eintracht should get the job done – even with the midweek Liverpool fixture.

Tip: Home win (1)

Gladbach vs. Bayern

Gladbach remain the league’s biggest concern after another defeat against Union. Lacking power in all areas and with key players Hack, Kleindienst and others missing, they look toothless. Bayern, on the other hand, are the Bundesliga’s dominant force – seven wins from seven, driven by a sensational Harry Kane.

Tip: Away win (2) + over 3.5 goals

Augsburg vs. Leipzig

Augsburg couldn’t build on their 3–1 win over Wolfsburg and drew 1–1 in Cologne. They lacked attacking punch, while defensively they were undone by an El Mala solo run. Leipzig, unbeaten in six, looked strong again in their 2–1 win over HSV. Baumgartner shone with a brace, and Nusa caused constant chaos on the wings. With that form and quality, Leipzig are clear favourites.

Tip: Away win (2) + under 3.5 goals

HSV vs. Wolfsburg

HSV came away empty-handed after a brave display in Leipzig. The performance was decent, but they lacked sharpness in the final third. Wolfsburg continue to stumble through the season – the 0–3 defeat to Stuttgart exposed their weakness once again. Without a win in six, there’s little reason to expect a turnaround here.

Tip: Draw

Hoffenheim vs. Heidenheim

Hoffenheim bounced back impressively with a 3–0 win at St. Pauli, led by a superb Kramaric – first assisting, then scoring himself. Heidenheim come with attacking power but wasted too many chances in their 2–2 draw with Bremen (31:11 shots!). Efficiency remains their main issue. Sinsheim will be a tough test.

Tip: Home win (1)

BVB vs. Cologne

Dortmund showed two faces in their 1–2 loss at Munich: a poor first half followed by a much-improved second. They pushed Bayern after the break but lacked composure in front of goal. Cologne rescued a late 1–1 draw against Augsburg but are still without a win. Too many defensive errors and little attacking drive. Dortmund will want to make amends and extend their strong home run.

Tip: Home win (1) + over 3.5 goals

Leverkusen vs. Freiburg

Leverkusen continued their strong form with a thrilling 4–3 win at Mainz. Grimaldo struck twice and Terrier scored on his return. Freiburg showed character in their 2–2 draw with Frankfurt, with Grifo’s stunning free-kick earning a point – but defensive lapses persist. With home advantage and attacking flair, Bayer are clear favourites.

Tip: Home win (1)

Stuttgart vs. Mainz

Stuttgart’s rise continues. Their 3–0 victory at Wolfsburg was their fourth league win in a row. Tiago Tomas scored, Stiller impressed in midfield and even without Demirovic and Leweling, their attack clicked perfectly. Mainz, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone. Their 3–4 loss to Leverkusen exposed once again big build-up issues, despite bright moments from Lee and Sieb. Stuttgart’s form makes them heavy favourites.

Tip: Home win (1) + under 3.5 goals

MERKUR Bundesliga Matchday Forecast: Highlights of Matchday 8

Crisis vs. powerhouse: Can Gladbach at least show some fight? Borussia Mönchengladbach sit bottom of the table with just three points from seven matches. After the 1–3 defeat at Union Berlin, they’re still waiting for their first win and look unsettled across all areas. Coach Eugen Polanski is missing key players such as Hack, Kleindienst and Netz. Offensively, there’s little pace or precision; defensively, a lack of stability. Set pieces remain a major weakness.

The mood couldn’t be more different at Bayern. Seven league games, seven wins – the record speaks for itself. In the 2–1 top clash against Dortmund, the champions dominated the first half and could have led by more at the break. Kane keeps scoring relentlessly, while Olise and Luis Díaz constantly threaten from the wings. Kompany’s team looks more balanced than ever, and even the Champions League schedule doesn’t seem to slow them down.

Historically, this fixture has been tighter than expected – Gladbach were once Bayern’s bogey team. But right now, the gap in form, structure and confidence looks too wide.

Forecast: Bayern march on with another commanding win.

Hoffenheim aim to halt Heidenheim’s attacking momentum. The 3–0 win at St. Pauli was a statement performance after three winless matches. Christian Ilzer’s side played compact, pressed high and showed a clear tactical plan. Kramaric was once again the key man – creator, scorer, and the engine of Hoffenheim’s attack. Defenders Coufal and Prömel impressed with their work rate. With renewed confidence, Hoffenheim now seek consistency at home.

Heidenheim travel with mixed feelings. Their 2–2 draw with Bremen showed attacking intent and dominance (31:11 shots!) but wastefulness cost them. Schmidt’s team play courageously and always go forward, yet away from home they’ve struggled. Defensive gaps could be exploited by Hoffenheim’s versatile attack.

Both sides favour open, high-energy football – goals seem guaranteed. The question is whether Heidenheim can finally convert their chances, or whether Hoffenheim’s individual quality will prevail.

Forecast: Hoffenheim continue their upward trend and win narrowly.

Dortmund face brave Cologne. After their defeat at Bayern, BVB are under pressure. Their 1–2 loss showed two halves – a weak first, then a stronger second that pushed the champions hard. Niko Kovac will have been pleased with the reaction, but now consistency is key. At Signal Iduna Park, only a win will do to stay near the top.

Cologne, on the other hand, arrive full of confidence. Sitting sixth after seven games, Lukas Kwasniok’s team play bold, attacking football. All eyes will be on rising star Said El Mala – will he start or again be used as a super sub? His pace and dribbling could trouble Dortmund’s defence.

Dortmund are favourites, but Cologne can play freely and without pressure. With a Champions League tie against Copenhagen midweek, BVB may not be at full energy. Expect an intense, open game decided by fine margins.

Forecast: Dortmund edge it narrowly, but Cologne remain tough opponents.
