Bundesliga matchday prediction 2025/26 – Matchday 29

The final stretch of the season has begun – and with each matchday, the pressure increases. While teams at the top of the table are battling for Champions League spots, the situation at the bottom is becoming increasingly tense. Every point can now make the difference. Direct duels are particularly in focus in the lower third: teams like Cologne, Bremen or Wolfsburg are fighting for every inch – mistakes are punished mercilessly. At the same time, in-form sides like Mainz sense their chance to climb further up the table and steer their season into calmer waters.

Merkur quick tips for the 29th matchday of the Bundesliga

Augsburg vs. Hoffenheim

FC Augsburg open Matchday 29 and are under pressure after three defeats and one draw. In the 1:1 draw in Hamburg, FCA showed phases of control but lacked the necessary decisiveness despite being a man up. Hoffenheim also arrive struggling: two consecutive defeats, most recently a 1:2 loss against in-form Mainz, have seen TSG slip out of the Champions League places. It is a clash between two teams that urgently need to make a statement.

Dortmund vs. Leverkusen

The team in second place hosts Leverkusen, and both sides come with plenty of momentum but also clear issues. While BVB struck late in Stuttgart and snatched a 2:0 win with an ice-cold double in stoppage time, Leverkusen showcased their full attacking power in a wild 6:3 against Wolfsburg – but also revealed a weak first half with many defensive vulnerabilities.

Tip: Draw

Leipzig vs. Gladbach

The 2:1 win in Bremen may not have been a footballing spectacle, but it showed exactly what defines the Saxons at the moment: efficiency. While Werder missed good chances, Leipzig struck clinically. The mood in Mönchengladbach is very different. In the 2:2 against Heidenheim, the Foals missed an important step in the relegation battle. After a good start, Eugen Polanski’s team completely lost control and even had to chase the game in the end.

Gladbach vs. Heidenheim

At VfL Wolfsburg, the main issues are currently at the back. The wild 3:6 against Leverkusen exposed their defensive problems without mercy – despite a decent first half, Hecking’s team completely collapsed after the break. Eintracht Frankfurt are not exactly stable either. In the 2:2 against Cologne, SGE threw away a 2:0 lead within minutes. Offensively, Frankfurt looked dangerous at times, but defensively far too vulnerable and lacking clear organisation in decisive moments.

Tip: Draw

Heidenheim vs. Union Berlin

Heidenheim showed strong morale in the 2:2 in Gladbach and were the more active team, especially after the break. At home in particular, Schmidt’s side often play with courage and fighting spirit. Union, meanwhile, are no longer in acute relegation danger but still struggle offensively to create clear chances – even in the 1:1 against St. Pauli, the final precision was often missing.

Tip: Draw

St. Pauli vs. Bayern

St. Pauli have one of the least threatening attacks in the league. Against Union, their goal came from distance – very little was created from open play. In addition, captain Irvine is now suspended, which is a heavy blow against Bayern. The Munich side, meanwhile, impressively demonstrated their quality in Freiburg. Despite trailing 0:2, they turned the game around – driven by the individual brilliance of Tom Bischof and immense pressure in the closing stages.

Cologne vs. Bremen

The Billy Goats showed in Frankfurt that they do not give up. Despite being 0:2 down at one stage, the team fought back, benefited from fresh impulses from the bench and looked more lively overall than in previous weeks. Werder’s form curve presents a mixed picture. Against Leipzig, they held their own for a long time but missed too many chances and were punished for two lapses.

Tip: Draw

Stuttgart vs. HSV

For 90 minutes, the Swabians had the game under control, allowed very little and still ended up empty-handed. HSV’s 1:1 against Augsburg was wild and intense and showed two sides. On the one hand, the promoted team struggled for a long time against a compact opponent; on the other hand, they suddenly developed real attacking power while a man down and even came closer to winning.

Tip: 1 + over 3.5 goals

Mainz vs. Freiburg

Mainz’s win in Hoffenheim was no coincidence but the result of a clear plan: stay compact, remain patient and strike at the right moment. The axis of Mwene and Tietz is currently working particularly well. Freiburg, on the other hand, must regroup after the late setback against Bayern. For a long time, everything pointed to a coup, but in the end, they were left empty-handed again.

Merkur Bundesliga matchday predictions: The highlights of matchday 29

When Dortmund and Leverkusen meet, spectacle is usually guaranteed, and the signs once again clearly point in that direction. Dortmund travel with momentum, even if the win in Stuttgart had an almost bizarre course. Harmless for long stretches, barely in the game – and then ice-cold in stoppage time. This very efficiency could become the decisive factor in the top match. Players like Adeyemi or Brandt have recently proven that they can capitalise on even few chances.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, delivered a real goal fest in the 6:3 against Wolfsburg. Especially after the break, the Werkself showed the attacking potential they possess. Grimaldo as the playmaker, plenty of pace on the wings and enormous presence in the penalty area – Bayer can turn games around within minutes.

Prediction: High tempo, many shots and little hesitation. This match has everything to become a real exchange of blows. Both teams will get their chances, both will make mistakes.

At first glance, the roles seem clearly defined: league leaders Bayern face a relegation candidate. But it is not quite that simple. St. Pauli have recently shown that they can be uncomfortable opponents – especially when they force the game into clear structures. In the 1:1 in Berlin, the Kiezkicker appeared compact, strong in duels and disciplined. Offensively, much remains patchy, but this very defensive stability could be the key against Bayern. However, the absence of captain Irvine weighs heavily, especially in a match where work rate and organisation are crucial.

Bayern travel with confidence but also with a special focus in mind: the upcoming second leg against Real Madrid. It is quite possible that Vincent Kompany will rotate and rest some key players. That could play into St. Pauli’s hands, especially as the Munich side may not be fully focused on this task at the Millerntor.

Prediction: A match that could be closer than the table suggests. St. Pauli may benefit from possible Bayern rotations and put up a strong fight. In the end, however, individual quality should make the difference.

A look at the table shows the significance of this match: Bremen (14th) and Cologne (15th) are separated by just one point. Both teams aim to create some breathing space at the bottom or remain deeply stuck in the relegation battle. The situation is clear: whoever wins here sends an important signal. Whoever loses slips further into trouble.

The Billy Goats showed character in the 2:2 in Frankfurt. Coming back from 0:2 speaks for the team’s mentality and the influence of new coach René Wagner. The substitutes made an impact, and the overall performance looked more lively. Nevertheless, there are still issues: defensively, stability is often lacking, and when Cologne have to control the game themselves, they sometimes lack clear solutions in the final third.

Werder delivered a committed performance against Leipzig but failed to seize the decisive moments. Chances were there, but clinical finishing was missing – a recurring issue. In addition, Puertas is absent, a player who creates important connections in midfield. Without him, Bremen may have to rely even more on transitions rather than sustained possession phases.

Prediction: Not a match for football purists, but a real battle of attrition. Cologne have the home advantage, Bremen the dangerous transition moments. Much points to a tight contest without a clear winner.
