Bundesliga matchday prediction 2025/26 – Matchday 24

Matchday 24 is all about extremes – at both ends of the table, opposites are colliding head-on. The focus is, of course, on the classic match between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern. A duel that traditionally makes headlines and, despite Munich's lead, has an enormous signal effect this time around. Can BVB close the gap and breathe new life into the title race? Or will Bayern put on another show of strength and pull away for good? While the battle for the championship is being fought at the top, at the other end of the table it's a matter of sheer survival. 17th place against 18th place – a real six-point game at the bottom of the table. For Bremen and Heidenheim, this may be one of their last chances to avoid falling behind for good. This is not about prestige, but about survival.

Merkur quick tips for the 24th match day of the Bundesliga

Augsburg vs. Köln

With their spectacular last-minute comeback in Wolfsburg, Augsburg have finally secured their place in the middle of the table. They are looking to secure their next win of the season against the newly promoted Cologne, which would also extend their cushion above the relegation zone. Cologne, on the other hand, boosted their morale with a 2-2 draw against Hoffenheim and urgently need points to avoid falling further down the table. The match in Augsburg will see two evenly matched teams go head to head.

Leverkusen vs. Mainz

After their surprising defeat at Union Berlin, Werkself's recent strong run has come to an end – now they need to show the right response at home against Mainz. Under Urs Fischer, Mainz remain difficult to beat, losing only one of their last five league games. However, ahead of their difficult away game at the BayArena, Mainz have recently struggled with their finishing and discipline. They cannot afford any slip-ups against strong hosts.

Bremen vs. Heidenheim

It's a pure relegation battle on the Weser: Werder have been waiting for a win for 13 games and slipped even further down the table after a bitter 1-2 defeat at St. Pauli. The pressure on new coach Daniel Thioune is growing – another setback could further exacerbate the situation. Heidenheim put in a good performance in a wild 3-3 draw with Stuttgart, but once again missed out on three much-needed points. We can expect a classic six-point game with maximum excitement.

Gladbach vs. Union Berlin

While Gladbach continues to wait for a breakthrough, Union travels with renewed confidence. The Foals have gone seven games without a win and recently lacked courage and attacking drive for long periods in Freiburg. Union, on the other hand, not only ended their own losing streak with their victory over Leverkusen, but also proved that they are still alive in the relegation battle. Passionate, compact, and clinical at the right moment – that's exactly what will be needed at Borussia-Park.

Tip: Draw

Hoffenheim vs. St. Pauli

After the 2-2 draw in Cologne, Hoffenheim wants to get back on track. TSG once again showed its quality on the pitch, but was too easily caught out defensively – a pattern that could prove dangerous against combative opponents. St. Pauli are traveling with momentum: their important 2-1 win in the relegation battle against Bremen has lifted the Kiezkickers into the relegation play-off spot. With passion, compactness, and efficiency, the Hamburg team now want to score points in Sinsheim too.

BVB vs. Bayern

BVB are unbeaten in 15 league games, but had to chase the game for a long time in Leipzig and salvaged at least a point thanks to Fabio Silva. Ahead of the top-of-the-table clash, Dortmund now need to improve their performance over 90 minutes. Bayern are traveling with confidence, even though they almost squandered a comfortable lead in their 3-2 win over Frankfurt. The record champions remain extremely dangerous in attack, led by Harry Kane, who once again scored twice. Defensively, however, Munich repeatedly made mistakes.

Tip: 2 + over 3.5 goals

Stuttgart vs. Wolfsburg

After the 3-3 draw in Heidenheim, there is likely to be a lot to discuss at VfB. Hoeneß's team fell behind twice, but fought back both times – including VAR drama, a disallowed goal, and penalties at both ends. Meanwhile, the Wolves arrive with another bitter story in their luggage. In their 3-2 defeat to Augsburg, VfL once again squandered a lead and conceded the decisive blow in stoppage time.

Tip: 1 + under 3.5 goals

Frankfurt vs. Freiburg

Despite the defeat, the 2-3 result in Munich was a small source of encouragement for Eintracht. Long held back, with little relief, the Hessians fought their way back into the game after going 0-3 down. The question now is: can Riera's team carry this energy into their home game? In their 2-1 win against Gladbach, the Sport-Club once again showed their maturity, defending with discipline and striking coldly from set pieces. Five home wins in a row speak for themselves, even if the game was tough going at times.

HSV vs. Leipzig

HSV put in a solid away performance in the 1-1 draw in Mainz. They dominated the game for long periods, with clear spells of possession and several good chances. In the end, a deflected free kick helped them equalize after falling behind. Leipzig, on the other hand, is likely still reeling from their 2-2 draw with Dortmund. RB dominated the game for over an hour, deservedly leading 2-0 and having their opponents under control – before an own goal and a late substitute goal snatched victory from their grasp.

Merkur Bundesliga matchday predictions: The highlights of matchday 24

It's a pure relegation battle on the Weser, and this time there are no more excuses. Werder slipped to 17th place after a 1-2 defeat in a direct duel with St. Pauli, has gone 13 league games without a win, and is deeper in trouble than ever. Even under Daniel Thioune, the hoped-for turnaround has yet to materialize. Against Pauli, Bremen had more possession and looked dominant at times, but in the final third, virtually nothing worked. A goalkeeping error put the Green-Whites further behind – another blow in what is already a fragile phase. The uncertainty is palpable, especially when it comes to turning games around after setbacks. Now Heidenheim, a direct competitor, awaits – a classic six-point game in which it's not just about points, but also about a small preliminary decision in the relegation battle.

FCH are also under pressure, but at least put in a good performance in their 3-3 draw with Stuttgart. Heidenheim took the lead twice, conceded twice, but it was clear that Frank Schmidt's team is alive and kicking. After nine consecutive games without a win, three points in Bremen would send a real signal at the bottom of the table. Offensively, Heidenheim proved against VfB that they can be dangerous in front of goal, but defensively they also showed weaknesses.

Prediction: This is a duel between two teams that invest a lot but repeatedly fail to deliver. Bremen will try to gain control in their own stadium through intensity and early pressing. Heidenheim is likely to lie in wait for counterattacks and set pieces. The same applies to both teams: losing is not an option. Whoever keeps their nerve here can make a real statement in the relegation battle

The classic match is electrifying—even if people had hoped for an even more explosive summit meeting beforehand. Thanks to BVB's 2-2 draw in Leipzig, the immense pressure on Bayern has eased somewhat. The record champions currently have an eight-point lead. Even in the best-case scenario, Dortmund would “only” close the gap to five points with a win. The drama surrounding the title race? It has flattened out somewhat.

And yet, for BVB, it is much more than just a prestige duel. After 15 unbeaten league games and the late equalizer in Leipzig, the Black and Yellows want to make a statement in front of their home crowd. A home win against Bayern would not only bring points, but also keep alive the last glimmer of hope in the championship race and send the signal: we are not completely out of the running yet.

Bayern, on the other hand, are coming into the game with confidence, but not without a few minor hiccups. They dominated for long periods of their 3-2 win over Frankfurt, but individual errors made it unnecessarily tense at the end. Offensively, FCB remain extremely dangerous with Kane as their finisher and their strength from set pieces, but defensively they are not always solid.

Prediction: Dortmund is fighting for its last realistic chance at the title, while Bayern is fighting for the final preliminary decision. And that alone is enough to give this classic match the special flavor that has distinguished it for years. Nevertheless, Bayern goes into the game as the favorite.

At Deutsche Bank Park, it's about more than just three points – it's about catching up with the leaders. Seventh-placed Freiburg travels to eighth-placed Frankfurt. Both teams are eyeing sixth place, which would mean international competition. In a sense, this is perhaps the last realistic opportunity to close the gap and avoid getting stuck in no man's land in the table.

Frankfurt showed morale in their 2-3 defeat in Munich. After falling behind significantly, Eintracht fought back impressively and even came close to equalizing late on. This reaction should give them courage. At the same time, the game revealed how vulnerable they can be under constant pressure, especially from set pieces and in their defensive coordination. In front of their home crowd, Riera's team will have to be more active, get on the ball earlier, and bring their attacking quality to the pitch more consistently.

Freiburg, on the other hand, remains true to its style: structured, disciplined, efficient. The 2-1 win against Gladbach was not an offensive fireworks display, but a mature performance, and once again set pieces were a decisive factor. The Sport-Club knows exactly how to win such close games. With 33 points behind them, they travel confidently, knowing that an away win would increase the gap to the bottom and sharpen their focus on the top.

Prediction: This is a crucial game for both teams. The winner will remain in contention for European competition, while the loser risks falling behind for the time being.
