Bundesliga Matchday Forecast – Matchday 17, 2025/26

Matchday 17 marks the end of the first half of the season and once again brings full intensity. Bayern are already firmly established as clear “autumn champions” with a comfortable lead, but behind them things are becoming increasingly turbulent. Both the race for the international places and the relegation battle are extremely tight and highly exciting. Added to this is the midweek round, with all teams back in action after two matches were recently postponed due to weather conditions. Particular highlights include the opening clash between VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund against Werder Bremen, and struggling Cologne facing an in-form Bayern side.

MERKUR Quick Tips for Bundesliga Matchday 17

Stuttgart vs Frankfurt

After the emphatic 4:0 win against Leverkusen, VfB travel into this clash full of confidence. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side immediately looked back up to operating temperature: aggressive, purposeful and with an excellently performing Undav/Leweling duo. Stuttgart are currently radiating a great deal of joy in playing, especially at home. Frankfurt remain the familiar surprise package. The spectacular 3:3 draw against Dortmund once again showed both sides of the team: offensively versatile, brave and always capable of scoring – but defensively vulnerable and at times too open.

BVB vs Bremen

After the spectacular 3:3 draw in Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund once again demonstrated why they are so difficult to beat this season. Even though the defence did not always look stable, Niko Kovač’s team showed character and earned a deserved late equaliser. Werder Bremen, on the other hand, come into the match from a special situation: their last game was postponed due to weather conditions, meaning their legs should be fresher – but they may be lacking match rhythm.

Mainz vs Heidenheim

After the bitter 2:2 draw away at Union Berlin, Mainz are once again left without three points, even though their second win of the season was within reach for a long time. This is exactly where the problem lies for the 05ers: lapses in concentration late in games repeatedly cost them points. Heidenheim’s 2:2 draw once again showed how resilient Frank Schmidt’s team are. Offensively, FCH rely heavily on commitment, second balls and set pieces; defensively they may be vulnerable, but they are rarely without a chance. Away from home, Heidenheim will once again build on precisely these qualities.

Tip: Draw

HSV vs Leverkusen

For HSV, the next self-inflicted setback came against Freiburg. The numerous red cards are no longer a coincidence and regularly cost Hamburg valuable points. If HSV do not get this issue under control quickly, the relegation battle will become increasingly tight. Leverkusen may be under pressure after the clear 0:4 defeat in Stuttgart, but they remain clear favourites against HSV. The Werkself have significantly more quality and will be determined to show a reaction after the bitter loss.

Wolfsburg vs St. Pauli

After the 1:8 debacle against Bayern, Wolfsburg are under pressure to respond. Despite a respectable first half, the team completely lost their way after the break. Against St. Pauli, the main focus will be on restoring defensive order. Following their weather-related postponement, the Kiezkicker are making their first appearance of the new year. They remain deep in the lower reaches of the table but have the small advantage of well-rested legs. With an eye on 16th place, every point counts, so a focused performance can be expected.

Tip: Draw

Leipzig vs Freiburg

After the postponed match and two consecutive defeats, RB Leipzig are also feeling the pressure. The Saxons want to regain momentum in the new year but will likely still have to do without top star Yan Diomande. As a result, the entire team will be required offensively to reassert their playing style. Freiburg travel with a hard-fought win from Hamburg. The victory against HSV highlighted the fighting spirit within the team. The Breisgau side operate compactly, remain patient and can strike at any time with their substitutes – exactly what makes them such an awkward opponent.

Hoffenheim vs Gladbach

Even though Hoffenheim were recently forced to take a break due to weather conditions, the first half of the season so far clearly speaks in favour of TSG. Sitting in sixth place with a game in hand, the team have quietly but consistently established themselves near the top and are currently among the league’s most stable sides. Opponents Gladbach arrive full of confidence. The convincing 4:0 win against Augsburg was a real statement, thanks in particular to high efficiency and a clinical Tabaković. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the Foals can replicate this ruthlessness away from home.

Tip: 1 + over 3.5 goals

Cologne vs Bayern

Despite the 2:2 draw in Heidenheim, the situation at 1. FC Köln remains tense. The point gained only superficially halted the negative run, while too many issues remain both in terms of play and defensive stability. The uncertainty is palpable – and discontent in the stands is growing. Initial calls of “Kwasniok out” are already being heard, further intensifying the pressure. The situation is completely different at FC Bayern. The league leaders have recently been in impressive form and are brimming with confidence after the attacking spectacle against Wolfsburg. Everything points towards a clear victory for the Munich side.

Tip: 2 + over 3.5 goals

Augsburg vs Union Berlin

The pressure is noticeably increasing in Augsburg. The heavy defeat in Gladbach once again exposed what FCA are currently lacking: defensive stability and decisive action in key moments. Especially at home, Augsburg are now obliged to show a reaction. Union Berlin’s late comeback against Mainz once again underlined the mentality of the Iron Ones, who continue to believe in their chance even in difficult match situations. From a footballing perspective, Union remain limited, but their efficiency from set pieces and physical presence continue to make them an uncomfortable opponent.

MERKUR Bundesliga Matchday Forecast: Highlights of Matchday 17

VfB Stuttgart sent out a real statement with their clear victory against Leverkusen and once again underlined how stable and mature Sebastian Hoeneß’s team have become. Pace, clarity in positional play and enormous finishing strength in the final third currently make VfB one of the most unpleasant opponents in the league. Players such as Undav and Leweling are working excellently together, complemented by an aggressive, well-coordinated defence. Stuttgart not only look strong in form, but also structurally solid – an important factor, especially during the midweek round.

Eintracht Frankfurt travel with renewed attacking momentum. Their winter signings made an immediate impression in the spectacular 3:3 draw against Dortmund. In particular, Younes Ebnoutalib, who scored the temporary 3:2, instantly demonstrated his potential. What stood out was not just a single moment, but the natural way in which he integrated himself into the new processes. Alongside the established core around players such as Knauff, Larsson and Uzun, an additional attacking option is emerging. The key question now is whether these new impulses will take effect sustainably or whether it will still take time for the automatisms to fully develop.

Prediction: Overall, a very well-rehearsed VfB side face a Frankfurt team undergoing offensive changes. Stuttgart go into the match with slight advantages, but if Frankfurt’s new attacking options click again, an open exchange of blows is on the cards.

For Borussia Dortmund, this clash marks the transition from spectacle to obligation. After the turbulent 3:3 draw in Frankfurt, it is now less about character and late goals, and simply about the three points. Especially at home, expectations are that dominant phases not only look good but are also reflected early on in the scoreline. A particularly interesting aspect will be the personnel decision in central attack. Serhou Guirassy has looked out of form for weeks and is currently falling short of expectations. This raises the question of whether Niko Kovač will persist with him or have the courage to start him on the bench. Fabio Silva has regularly provided fresh impetus as a substitute, so a start for the Portuguese forward would be a clear signal and could give Dortmund’s attack a different dynamic.

Werder Bremen arrive under special circumstances. While the weather-related postponement ensures fresh legs, it also deprives the team of some match rhythm. Added to this is the fact that it will be their first game without Boniface, whose departure has now been officially confirmed. Although his influence on Bremen’s game had recently been limited, his absence nevertheless affects the attacking options and squad depth. Bremen’s approach is likely to be clear: remain compact, disrupt Dortmund’s rhythm and look to create danger through counter-attacks. If they manage to keep the match open for a long time, it could develop into a game of patience – precisely the scenario in which BVB have shown vulnerability this season.

Prediction: Dortmund are clearly favourites. But as so often, the decisive factor will be whether the Black and Yellows can translate their superiority consistently onto the pitch.

The circumstances could hardly be more contrasting. While FC Bayern travel to Cologne as dominant league leaders with an 11-point advantage over second place, 1. FC Köln remain stuck in a difficult phase both sporting and emotionally. The recent 2:2 draw in Heidenheim brought a point, but did little to address the underlying issues: Cologne are still waiting for a real sense of achievement, and patience among supporters is wearing thin. Under Lukas Kwasniok, a certain willingness and higher intensity are visible, but results continue to elude them. The draw in Heidenheim ultimately extended the negative run rather than ending it. Early signs of discontent are already emerging in the stands – not only due to the lack of results, but also with regard to some of the coach’s personnel decisions. In isolated cases, even the coaching position is being questioned. A delicate moment in the season, especially with FC Bayern, arguably the toughest opponent possible, coming to town.

FC Bayern, by contrast, arrive full of confidence. The 8:1 win against Wolfsburg was another statement and underlined the immense attacking power of the Munich side. Luis Díaz and Olise were in outstanding form, while the pace and variability in the final third are currently unmatched in the league. Even minor tactical adjustments or squad rotations seem to have little impact on fluency. For Bayern, the question is less about “if” and more about “how”. During the midweek round, Vincent Kompany will need to rotate, but the squad remains clearly superior in quality. If Bayern manage to take control early on, Cologne could be facing a match that quickly tilts in a one-sided direction.

Prediction: After the dominant performance against Wolfsburg, anything other than a clear Bayern victory in Cologne would be a genuine surprise.
