Champions League Matchday Predictions for 2026/27: Matchday 1

The Greek champions will open the season in front of their home crowd, while the team from Linz will be playing their very first match in the Champions League. After a 5-1 victory over Celtic Glasgow in the second leg of the Champions League qualifiers, LASK is traveling to the match with confidence. Individually, however, AEK has the edge with star striker Luka Jović. Marko Nikolić won the league title in his debut season and also led AEK to the Conference League quarterfinals. Dietmar Kühbauer, on the other hand, won the domestic double with LASK and is likely to rely on a deep defensive setup.

But with Erling Haaland, the English side has a guaranteed goal-scorer on their side: In each of his four seasons with City, he has scored more than 30 goals in competitive matches—and, as is well known, he needs very few chances to do so. At Lille, captain Benjamin André pulls the strings in midfield, while goalkeeper Berke Özer posted the most shutouts in Ligue 1 last season. Antony and Abde Ezzalzouli promise speed on the wings.

The top match of the evening: Mourinho faces Inter in the season opener, of all teams. Sitting on the opposing bench is his former player, Cristian Chivu. Kylian Mbappé scored 15 goals in the Champions League last season, and Inter enters the tournament as the Italian champion. For the Madrid side, this is also a chance for redemption, as the 2025–26 season ended without a title. Chivu, on the other hand, promptly secured the Serie A and Coppa Italia double in his first year on the Inter bench. With Lautaro Martínez and Mbappé leading the charge, two number-nines who rarely miss a chance will face off.

Barça won all 19 of its home league games last season. Feyenoord is off to a fresh start under the returning Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Lamine Yamal is likely to make the difference on the right wing; the 19-year-old has recently tallied six goals and four assists in the Champions League. Hansi Flick continues to have his team defend extremely high up the field, which should at least open up a few counterattacking opportunities for the Rotterdam side. Sebastian Hoeneß is likely to be on high alert nonetheless—after all, Norwegian clubs have recently been upsetting favorites left and right. Captain Zlatko Tripić is responsible for goals and assists at Viking.

Andoni Iraola is making his debut as a Champions League coach, and he’s facing the competition’s most experienced coach right off the bat: Diego Simeone is entering his 16th season with Atlético. Liverpool is still searching for the confidence it had in Klopp’s early years. This summer, the Reds signed Bradley Barcola, a winger from Paris, to fill that void. Atlético didn’t bow out until the semifinals last season and brings the patience needed for long matches. The game will likely be decided by a solo play.
