Bundesliga Matchday Predictions 2026/27 – Matchday 8

With a 3-1 win in Freiburg, FC Bayern reclaimed the top spot in the standings and, with 17 points, sits ahead of Borussia Dortmund thanks to a better goal differential. Both teams remain undefeated in the Bundesliga. Behind them are Freiburg and Leverkusen, each with 13 points, while Werder Bremen climbed to sixth place with a win in Mainz. Despite its first win of the season in Stuttgart, Mönchengladbach remains at the bottom of the table, though it now has at least three points to its credit.

Matchday 8 kicks off on Friday with the game between Elversberg and Mainz. Six matches will follow on Saturday, highlighted by the classic showdown between Bayern and Dortmund in the evening. To wrap things up on Sunday, Union will face Cologne, and Frankfurt will take on HSV.

Merkur Quick Tips for Matchday 8 of the Bundesliga

Elversberg suffered its worst loss of the season in a 0-4 defeat in Leipzig and has now conceded a total of 15 goals. At home, however, their record is significantly better, with two wins in three games. Mainz has won all three of its away games this season, scoring ten goals while conceding only three, whereas at home it has earned just one point in four games. Since the visitors from Mainz are currently in better form, the odds are in their favor for Friday night’s match.

Tip: 2

Augsburg is still undefeated at home, but has managed only one win and three draws in four home games. The most recent 1-1 draw against Union was a turbulent affair, as both teams received a red card. On offense, only Bayern and Leipzig have scored more goals (25 and 20, respectively) than FCA, which has 17. Freiburg has lost two straight games—one to Leverkusen and one to Bayern—but remains in third place with 13 points. Since Freiburg has won only once on the road, a draw seems likely.

Tip: X

With just four goals, Schalke has the league’s least potent offense and has failed to score in all three of its home games. On the other hand, its defense has been solid, conceding only seven goals, making it the third-best in the league. Leipzig has won all four of its home games without conceding a goal, but has come away empty-handed in three of its away games and has seen the ball hit the back of its own net 11 times. In Gelsenkirchen, therefore, one of these two losing streaks must come to an end.

Tip: 2

Leverkusen lost 0-3 at Hoffenheim, with all the goals they conceded coming in the final 15 minutes. At the BayArena, however, the Werkself has been flawless, winning three straight games while conceding just one goal. Stuttgart, on the other hand, has lost five of its seven Bundesliga matches and most recently fell to Gladbach 2–3. On the road, VfB has managed just one win in four games, so the hosts clearly have the upper hand in Leverkusen.

Tip: 1

Gladbach celebrated its first win of the season with a 3-2 victory in Stuttgart after six straight losses to start the season. At home, Borussia has yet to earn a point, even though it has already scored seven goals there. Paderborn defeated HSV 1-0 thanks to a late goal by Rayan Philippe. On the road, however, the team is still waiting for its first win and has managed only two draws in three away games. After their breakthrough win in Stuttgart, Gladbach holds a slight advantage.

Tip: 1

Werder has yet to suffer a loss at the Weserstadion this season, scoring eight goals in three home games. Hoffenheim has scored at least once in all seven of its Bundesliga games, though it has also conceded 14 goals. On the road, TSG has won only one of its three games so far. Since both teams are evenly matched offensively—with 15 and 14 goals, respectively—Bremen’s stronger home form tips the scales in their favor.

Tip: 1

With 25 goals, Bayern boasts the league’s best offense and has scored 18 goals in just three home games while conceding only two. Although Dortmund has scored only twelve goals, it has conceded just four in seven games and remains undefeated on the road with two wins and one draw. In this clash between the best offense and the best defense, neither side will give the other much of an advantage. In the battle for the top of the standings, a draw is therefore the most likely outcome.

Tip: X

Union has been undefeated for three games and has earned five points with a win against Elversberg and two draws against Dortmund and Augsburg. However, the “Eisernen” have already conceded 18 goals—only Gladbach has conceded more. Cologne previously played to a 0–0 draw against Schalke, coming up short on several occasions against goalkeeper Karius. On the road this season, the FC has lost all three games and scored only twice. A home win for Berlin seems the most likely outcome here.

Tip: 1

HSV has scored only six goals in seven games and failed to score in four of them. On the road, the team has won just one of four games, with a goal differential of 3-10. Frankfurt has scored significantly more often, with ten goals, but has also conceded 17 goals. Eintracht’s home record stands at one win, one draw, and one loss. Thanks to its greater scoring threat and home-field advantage, Frankfurt enters this matchup as the favorite.

Merkur Bundesliga Matchday Preview: Highlights of Matchday 8

Things are going really well for Werder right now. In the 3-2 win in Mainz, Niclas Füllkrug gave his team an early 2-0 lead by converting two penalty kicks in the 7th and 25th minutes. Werder thus celebrated its first road win of the season. Since their 1-4 loss in their season opener in Freiburg, the team has now gone six games without a loss, and Füllkrug leads the scoring race with eight goals. The Bremen squad’s morale is also striking, as Werder trailed by two goals against Augsburg, Dortmund, and Paderborn in each game but still managed to earn points.

Hoffenheim is also coming into the match on a roll. Following a 3-0 victory over Lyon in the Europa League, TSG also defeated Leverkusen 3-0 in the Bundesliga. All three goals came in the final 15 minutes: Andrej Kramarić converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute, Alexander Prass added another in the 89th minute, and Max Moerstedt scored in stoppage time. Prass received a yellow-red card after his goal for celebrating without his jersey and will therefore miss the match in Bremen. With two consecutive league wins, Hoffenheim has climbed to tenth place.

Prediction: Werder heads into the match brimming with confidence and with Füllkrug in top scoring form, and enters the game as the favorite in front of its home crowd. Although Hoffenheim has recently posted an impressive victory, it will have to do without the suspended Prass in Bremen. The Hanseatic side will ultimately prevail by a narrow margin.

Bayern won 3–1 away at SC Freiburg, thereby regaining top spot in the table, despite being without several key players. As well as Manuel Neuer, Minjae Kim, Luis Díaz and Aleksandar Pavlović, manager Vincent Kompany was also unable to take his place on the touchline due to illness. Assistant manager Aaron Danks stood in for him. Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry, who scored his 100th Bundesliga goal in the process, had already secured a 2–0 lead before half-time. Freiburg pulled one back through an own goal by Tom Bischof, but Michael Olise sealed the victory in stoppage time with a shot into an empty net.

Dortmund have ended their mini-slump. Following a 2–2 draw against Bremen, a 0–1 defeat at Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League and a 0–0 draw at Union, BVB first won 2–1 away at Sabah FK in Baku, with Serhou Guirassy scoring both goals. Niko Kovač’s side then secured a 1–0 league victory over Frankfurt, thanks to a superb goal by Maximilian Beier in the 80th minute following an assist from Jobe Bellingham. This leaves Dortmund with five wins and two draws from seven Bundesliga matches.

Prediction: In the Super Cup in August, Bayern won 2–1 in Dortmund. This time, the record champions are playing at home but are likely to be without several key players, whilst BVB arrive in stronger form following the end of their run of poor results. Consequently, the two sides will end up drawing.

Frankfurt lost a close 0-1 match in Dortmund, as the decisive goal wasn’t scored until late in the game. Jonathan Burkardt and Younes Ebnoutalib both had good scoring opportunities, and the expected goals (xG) were not far apart at 0.92 to 1.36. A week earlier, Eintracht had celebrated its first home win since March with a 1-0 victory over Cologne. Off the field, the departure of sporting director Markus Krösche in mid-October caused a stir; Axel Hellmann is temporarily taking over his duties.

HSV had won three games in a row before the Hamburg team lost 0-1 in Paderborn. Rayan Philippe scored in the 88th minute with a low shot from distance after an assist from Felix Götze. With an expected goals (xG) of 0.55, Hamburg remained largely harmless for long stretches of the game and had to play without their captain, Nicolai Remberg, who is out with a long-term injury, so Yussuf Poulsen captained the team.

Prediction: Despite the loss, Eintracht put in a solid performance in Dortmund and will look to build on their victory over Cologne at home. HSV may be lacking some confidence following their late setback in Paderborn. That’s why Frankfurt will win by a narrow margin.
