Bundesliga matchday prediction 2025/26 – Matchday 33

The season is entering its penultimate round and the table is taking clearer shape. While HSV and Union Berlin have recently secured their place in the league, attention is now turning to the remaining decisions. At the bottom of the table, everything points to a three-way battle: Wolfsburg, St. Pauli and Heidenheim are fighting for the relegation play-off spot. At the same time, the race for the Champions League is intensifying. Stuttgart, Leverkusen and Hoffenheim are level on points and are locked in an exciting battle for fourth place. Particularly explosive: the direct clash between VfB and the Werkself – a match of enormous significance.

Merkur quick tips for the 33th matchday of the Bundesliga

BVB vs. Frankfurt

Borussia Dortmund suffered a setback: the 0–1 defeat in Gladbach was not only poor in terms of performance but also cost them the chance to secure the runners-up spot early. In particular, BVB looked surprisingly harmless in attack – hardly any ideas, hardly any cutting edge. Frankfurt are also travelling in anything but stable form. The 1–2 home defeat against HSV once again highlighted Eintracht’s main issue: plenty of possession, phases of promising play – but too little consistency in the final third.

Leipzig vs. Pauli

The 1–4 defeat in Leverkusen was clear and showed that the Saxony side are vulnerable against top teams. Nevertheless, the situation remains clear – at home against a relegation candidate, a win is essential to avoid jeopardising their objectives. St. Pauli remain deep in crisis. The 1–2 defeat against Mainz was already their eighth winless match in a row and, above all, extremely weak in attack.

Tip: 1 + over 3.5 goals

Stuttgart vs. Leverkusen

VfB Stuttgart showed tremendous morale in the direct clash with Hoffenheim, but the 3–3 draw also revealed clear defensive problems. Bayer Leverkusen were in outstanding form in their 4–1 win against Leipzig. Dominant in possession, efficient in front of goal and with an exceptional Schick, the Werkself currently look far more dangerous.

Tip: 2

Augsburg vs. Gladbach

FC Augsburg are playing with freedom after securing survival and delivered a mature, composed performance in their 3–1 win in Bremen. Compact in defence and ruthless in transition, the Fuggerstadt side took their chances consistently. Borussia Mönchengladbach also come into the match with momentum after securing survival with a 1–0 win against Dortmund. In a clash with little pressure on either side, much currently points to an open game.

Tip: Draw

Hoffenheim vs. Bremen

TSG Hoffenheim impressively demonstrated their attacking power in the 3–3 draw against Stuttgart. However, despite having a numerical advantage and numerous chances, they failed to decide the match early. Werder Bremen looked surprisingly harmless in their 1–3 defeat against Augsburg. Plenty of possession, but hardly any penalty-area action and too vulnerable defensively.

Wolfsburg vs. Bayern

The Wolves delivered a solid performance in the 1–1 draw in Freiburg but once again lacked efficiency. For long periods, Wolfsburg were the better team but failed to reward themselves and had to settle for a point. Bayern Munich struggled for long stretches against Heidenheim, once again launching a comeback and at least rescuing a late point.

HSV vs. Freiburg

Hamburger SV made a strong statement with their 2–1 win in Frankfurt and secured survival early. In particular, their solid defensive work in the closing stages is encouraging. Freiburg, on the other hand, struggled in the 1–1 draw against Wolfsburg, looked lacking in ideas in attack and were unable to turn their superiority into clear chances.

Tip: Draw

Köln vs. Heidenheim

1. FC Köln looked like the certain winners for a long time in their 2–2 draw in Berlin but ultimately failed to see the game out. Heidenheim, meanwhile, delivered a brave and highly effective performance in transition in their 3–3 draw against Bayern. Despite a great fight, FCH missed out on pulling off the upset and also had to settle for a point in the relegation battle.

Mainz vs. Union Berlin

Mainz have definitively pulled away from the relegation battle with their win at the Millerntor. They struck early, remained compact afterwards and ruthlessly exploited the opponent’s weaknesses. Union Berlin, on the other hand, remain unpredictable: largely lacking ideas against Köln, hardly any chances and only showing real energy and morale in the closing stages.

Merkur Bundesliga matchday predictions: The highlights of matchday 33

VfB Stuttgart host Bayer Leverkusen – a direct duel between two teams currently competing on equal footing for Champions League places. While Leverkusen are defending fourth place, Stuttgart are right behind them and looking to attack that very position.

VfB recently delivered a true attacking spectacle. In the 3–3 draw in Hoffenheim, the team showed great morale, even came back while a man down and secured a crucial point with the final action. This mentality could prove decisive in the final stretch of the season. However, the match also revealed the downside: Stuttgart are vulnerable in defence. Three goals conceded, many chances allowed and problems with second balls – these are issues that can quickly be punished against a team like Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen travel with plenty of momentum. The 4–1 win against Leipzig was not just a victory but a real statement in the Champions League race. Particularly impressive: their dominance in possession and efficiency in front of goal. Once again, Patrik Schick is in focus, having scored a hat-trick and currently looking almost unstoppable. Leverkusen play with flexibility, creativity and, above all, determination.

Prediction: Everything points to a tight, intense match with chances for both sides. Stuttgart will give everything in front of their home crowd, but Leverkusen currently appear slightly more mature and consistent.

VfL Wolfsburg showed in Freiburg that they have fully arrived in the relegation battle. Disciplined, compact and well-structured, the Lower Saxony side were the better team for long stretches. However, one thing was once again missing: consistency. Several good chances went unused, allowing Freiburg to equalise late on. This pattern continues – Wolfsburg do many things right but reward themselves too rarely.

FC Bayern recently showed two different faces. Against Heidenheim, the heavily rotated side struggled for a long time, even fell significantly behind, and then once again demonstrated enormous quality and comeback mentality. With the introduction of their top stars, the attack immediately gained momentum. Players like Kane, Olise and Musiala pose a threat at any time. At the same time, the match also revealed weaknesses: defensive coordination, lack of control and problems against brave opponents.

Prediction: Wolfsburg will fight, resist and have their moments. But over 90 minutes, individual quality clearly favours the record champions.

FC Köln looked like certain winners for a long time in Berlin. Two goals ahead, the game under control – and yet only one point at the end. The 2–2 at Union was symbolic of the current situation: stable and efficient in phases, but not consistent enough to see games through cleanly. Offensively, however, Köln looked dangerous. Players like Bülter and El Mala took their chances effectively, and the overall structure of play appeared organised.

Heidenheim once again showed against Bayern that the team is very much alive. 2–0 up, playing bravely, countering ruthlessly – and ultimately still only one point. Particularly bitter: the late equaliser from an unfortunate own goal following Olise’s shot off the post. Nevertheless, the performance is encouraging. Zivzivadze in particular is currently in outstanding form and provides the necessary quality in attack. Compared to many other teams at the bottom, Heidenheim play surprisingly offensively and actively look for a way forward.

Prediction: The situation still favours FC Köln: home advantage, better position in the table and the opportunity to secure survival definitively. However, Heidenheim will not go down without a fight and have recently proven how uncomfortable they can be.
