Bundesliga matchday prediction 2025/26 – Matchday 28

Matchday 28 of our Bundesliga matchday prediction is entirely shaped by the decisive phase of the season. While the balance of power at the top of the table is clear, the race for the international places is becoming increasingly intense, especially just behind them. Fixtures such as Stuttgart vs Dortmund or Leipzig vs Bremen could already prove to be decisive in setting the direction. At the same time, tensions are boiling at the bottom of the table. Several teams are separated by only a few points, and every point could make the difference in the battle for survival.

Merkur quick tips for the 28th matchday of the Bundesliga

Leverkusen vs. Wolfsburg

After the bitter 3:3 draw in Heidenheim, Leverkusen are under pressure to act. The Werkself squandered a comfortable lead and must urgently respond in the race for the Champions League places. A clear reaction is therefore required at home. Wolfsburg, on the other hand, remain vulnerable and, above all, too ineffective in attack. The defeat against Bremen showed that the team currently lacks cutting edge and finishing luck.

Freiburg vs. Bayern

Freiburg head into the clash with FC Bayern full of confidence. The comeback win at St. Pauli showed that SCF can turn even difficult matches around. The Breisgau side have looked improved in attack in particular in recent outings. Bayern remain in top form. In the 4:0 win against Union, the Munich side dominated at will and displayed their full class. The record champions are currently almost unstoppable, especially going forward.

Tip: 2 + over 3.5 goals

Bremen vs. Leipzig

Werder Bremen picked up important points in the relegation battle with their win in Wolfsburg, but remain limited going forward. Much depends on efficiency and individual moments – against top teams, that may not be enough. Opponents Leipzig arrive full of confidence. The emphatic victory against Hoffenheim was a real statement in the race for the Champions League. Werder will have to hope for a minor miracle to keep the points in Bremen.

Gladbach vs. Heidenheim

Gladbach showed their quality at times in the 3:3 draw in the derby against Köln, but continue to reveal major defensive problems. The Foals’ matches remain spectacular – though often at the expense of stability. Heidenheim, meanwhile, demonstrated tremendous resilience in their 3:3 against Leverkusen. The FCH remain dangerous, particularly through set pieces and fighting spirit.

Tip: Draw

Hoffenheim vs. Mainz

Hoffenheim suffered a heavy setback in the 0:5 defeat in Leipzig. TSG looked overwhelmed for long periods and found hardly any solutions. Mainz, on the other hand, are a different story: the 05ers are continuing their upward trend and celebrated another important win with a 2:1 victory against Frankfurt. Their aggressive style of play, early ball recoveries and efficiency in front of goal in particular currently make FSV an uncomfortable opponent.

HSV vs. Augsburg

Hamburger SV recently suffered a setback despite a strong first half: in the 2:3 defeat in Dortmund, the Rothosen let a comfortable lead slip. A home win would represent the next important step towards survival. FCA’s heavy 2:5 defeat exposed major defensive problems, and their home run has come to an end. Both teams are now battling for three crucial points.

Stuttgart vs. Dortmund

VfB Stuttgart head into this top match full of confidence. In the convincing 5:2 win in Augsburg, the Swabians were outstanding in attack and extremely efficient. Deniz Undav in particular is currently almost unstoppable and has now scored in six consecutive Bundesliga matches. Borussia Dortmund showed two sides in their 3:2 win against HSV. While the second half was dominant and full of pressure, BVB struggled in build-up play before the break and made too many individual errors.

Tip: Draw

Union Berlin vs. St. Pauli

Union were largely outclassed in the 0:4 defeat in Munich and were almost exclusively occupied with defensive duties for long periods. A response is now required in their own stadium. FC St. Pauli also suffered a setback recently. After previously picking up seven points from three matches, they were beaten again by Freiburg, even though the Kiezkicker were in the game for a long time and had even taken the lead.

Tip: 1 + under 2.5 goals

Frankfurt vs. Köln

Eintracht Frankfurt will be looking to get back on track quickly after the defeat in Mainz. The performance was decent at times, but they lacked the necessary clarity in the final third. Köln, on the other hand, come into this off the back of a spectacular derby in which their attack in particular impressed. Scoring three times and coming back on several occasions shows that there is enough quality going forward. However, the defence remains a factor of uncertainty.

Merkur Bundesliga matchday predictions: The highlights of matchday 28

SC Freiburg head into this clash with renewed confidence. In the 2:1 win at St. Pauli, Julian Schuster’s team showed two sides: initially lacking ideas and vulnerable, but much more purposeful after the break with a clear improvement in attacking play. Matchwinner was Matanovic with a brace – a symbol of the team’s mentality and ability to turn matches around. Freiburg are particularly difficult to beat at home and thrive on their intensity and team cohesion.

However, FC Bayern represent a completely different calibre of opponent. The record champions were in impressive form in their 4:0 win against Union Berlin. For long stretches, Vincent Kompany’s side controlled the game, moving both the ball and their opponents around with ease, and were especially clinical after their quick-fire double before half-time. Bayern currently look extremely versatile in attack – with players like Kane, Olise and Gnabry capable of making the difference at any moment.

Prediction: Freiburg will put up a fight and compete for spells, but Bayern’s individual quality and current form clearly give them the edge.

The Swabians recently made a real statement. In the 5:2 win in Augsburg, Sebastian Hoeneß’s team dominated for long stretches and produced a scintillating attacking display. Deniz Undav in particular is currently almost unstoppable: the Germany international striker is scoring at will and is the focal point of the attacking play. Stuttgart impress not only with individual quality, but also with clear structures, high tempo and great versatility in the final third.

Dortmund, on the other hand, had to work hard for their win against HSV. After a poor first half, BVB were even 0:2 down, but showed a completely different side after the break. With significantly more pressure, tempo and determination, they managed to turn the game around. This comeback quality is a strong signal – at the same time, the defensive lapses remain an issue that top teams can punish quickly.

Prediction: An open game with high tempo and plenty of chances. Stuttgart currently look slightly more settled, but Dortmund remain extremely dangerous.

For Eintracht Frankfurt, this match comes with clear implications. After the defeat in Mainz, the pressure in the race for the international places has noticeably increased. The performance was by no means poor, but once again they lacked the final edge in front of goal. On top of that, there have been personnel setbacks due to injury-related changes – far from ideal conditions for picking up consistent points in this decisive phase of the season.

1. FC Köln arrive on the back of a chaotic derby that perfectly reflects their current season. Going forward, the FC are always capable of opening up games and scoring goals. Scoring three times against Gladbach and showing resilience on multiple occasions will give them confidence. At the same time, their defensive weaknesses remain obvious, particularly in quick transitions where Köln repeatedly leave gaps.

Prediction: Frankfurt have the more mature overall approach and the home advantage, but Köln possess enough attacking power to be dangerous.
